District Vidin is situated in the North West part of the country. And it is the gate of Europe to Bulgaria. On the north it is by the river Danube. District Vidin has a very rich history with lots of historical and cultural monuments and sights, sculptures, pottery and bronze figures which are testimonials for the progress of the ancient Ratziaria (Archar), Bononia (Vidin), Castra Martes (Kula),in the epoch of the Roman rule.
In the 13th-14th century Bdin (Vidin) is not only political but very important economical center with highly developed crafts, arts and big agricultural producers, and besides this it is a center of vivid letter activities. During two millenniums the region has been important military, transport, and commercial centre. There is great opportunity for fishing, hunting, sun-bathing, tourism, lots of employees, and good diplomacy with the neighbor countries. One of the main aims of the regional development of district Vidin is tourism due to historical, archeological and cultural heritage.
Some of the most famous sights are:
- Baba Vida Fortress which has been existing since 3rd-4th century in North-Western part of Roman fortress - Bononia.
- Magura cave (Rabisha village) with 700 rock paintings which are the biggest finding of that kind on the Balkans.
- Kaleto - system of supporting equipment between the mainland and river Danube.
- Ratziaria - remains from the Roman town which is situated 17 km away from Vidin. This is a very good place for tourism and fishing.
- The Cross Barrack-it has been built in 1789 at the place of the Turkish palace under the polish supervising.
- The Mosque and the library of Pazvantoglu which make a complete complex, built by independent ruler in 1800.
- Turkish police office (Konak) - an interesting monument from 18th century.
- The Belogradchik Rocks (Belogradchishki skali) are a group of bizarre sandstone and limestone rock formations, reaching up to 200 m in height. They form a strip, which is 30 km long and up to 3 km wide, and are located north of the western slopes of Stara Planina, near the town of Belogradchik in Bulgaria. The formations are a product of erosion
